My Freiwilliges Wissenschaftliches Jahr at the University of Oldenburg — •Katrin Nagel, Daniel Timmer, and Christoph Lienau — Institut für Physik, Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, Oldenburg, Germany
Many highschool graduates face the difficult question of what they want to do. The variety of courses of study can be intimidating and few have an idea of what to do after their Abitur. These people have the opportunity to do a Bundesfreiwilligendienst (BFD). A BFD is a voluntary gap year between school and study as a self-discovery phase. The Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg offers a special yet lesser known version as one of very few universities called Freiwilliges Wissenschaftliches Jahr (FWJ, voluntary scientific year). I am doing my FWJ in the physics department, specifically in the research group Ultrafast Nano-Optics, where I gain an insight into scientific work as well as first lab experiences by building an interferometer. Interferometers are highly used in current research, e.g. ultrafast coherent spectroscopy. On my poster, I will report on my experiences with the FWJ in Oldenburg and show first results of my experiments. Increased awareness of this program would be particularly helpful for future Abitur graduates who are not sure what field of study they want to choose.
