Janus particles, by using their asymmetric properties to self-propel due to phoretic effects, are the most prominent artificial active colloids at the microscale. Their ability to extract energy from their surroundings and to self-assemble are used to perform specific tasks. However, due to the vast amount of types of Janus particles and the complex systems they evolve in, the way they interact with their environment remains poorly understood. Optical tweezers can be used to trap them and control their behaviour. By studying a Janus particle that spontaneously rotates in an optical tweezer, we aim to understand the main physical phenomena driving its dynamics. We compare experimental results with overdamped simulations where the optical tweezer is modelled with ray-optics in order to identify how thermophoretic self-propulsion and optical effects contribute differently to this behaviour.
