The award-winning documentary Picture a Scientist (USA, 2020) follows three renowned women scientists as they navigate the academic system. Through their personal experiences, the film powerfully demonstrates that scientific excellence alone does not determine who succeeds in research and higher education. Instead, it reveals structural inequalities: sexual harassment, subtle devaluation, exclusion from professional networks, precarious employment conditions, and institutional barriers that particularly affect women and marginalized groups.The documentary goes beyond individual stories. It connects biographical perspectives with social-science research and makes clear that these are not isolated incidents but deeply embedded structures within academia. At the same time, the film highlights solidarity, collective agency, and strategies of resistance, encouraging reflection on how to create a more equitable and discrimination-sensitive research culture.The screening is organized by the DGP Working Group on Equal Opportunities, the Faculty of Physics Equal Opportunities Team, and the TU Dresden Complaints Office for incidents of harassment, discrimination, and violence.Admission is free!
