Electronic and Magnetic Properties of CaMn2P2 and SrMn2P2 Single Crystals — •Jule Kirschke, Joscha Grunwald, T. R. Thomas, N. S. Sangeetha, Ashiwini Balodhi, Andreas Kreyssig, and Anna E. Böhmer — Experimental Physics IV, Ruhr-University Bochum, Bochum, Germany
CaMn2P2 and SrMn2P2 are insulators that adopt the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type structure containing corrugated Mn honeycomb layers. Here, we report a systematic study of single crystals grown from Sn flux, including attempts to synthesize Sr1−xKxMn2P2, which revealed that K does not substitute in the SrMn2P2 structure. In contrast, CaMn2P2 exhibits an unexpected sensitivity to the Ca content used during growth. While powder x-ray diffraction confirms identical crystal structures for all batches, their transport properties differ drastically. Samples prepared with high Ca content during the growth anomalously show almost metallic temperature dependence of the resistivity, whereas others show the insulating behavior commonly reported in the literature. The electronic and magnetic properties of different samples were studied by heat capacity and magnetization measurements.
