High-repetition-rate THz generation in LiNbO3 — •Jyothsna Varghese, Andrey Ryabov, Joanne Woodhouse, Athira Mini Santhosh, and Kasra Amini — Max-Born-Institut, Max-Born-Str. 2A, 12489 Berlin, Germany
We demonstrate high-repetition-rate terahertz (THz) generation via Cherenkov-type optical rectification in a MgO-doped LiNbO3 thin slab using a line-focus pump geometry (1030 nm, 350 fs, 40-100 kHz) [1,2]. Distributing the pump energy over a large aspect ratio minimizes material damage while enhancing conversion efficiency. Translating the line focus toward the crystal edge increases THz output due to reduced absorption length [2]. A maximum pulse energy of 283 nJ is achieved at 7 W pump power corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 1.6×10−3, the highest reported for this slab geometry. The generated single-cycle THz pulses (∼0.3-0.7 THz), as confirmed by electro-optic sampling measurements, provide a scalable source for high-repetition-rate ultrafast electron diffraction.
