Stochastic wave function method vs. density matrix equation: comparison of numerical performance — •W. Huber, H.P. Breuer, and F. Petruccione — Fakult"at f"ur Physik, Universit"at Freiburg, Hermann-Herder-Str. 3, D-79104 Freiburg

The numerical investigation of open quantum systems can, in the Markovian regime, be based either on the master equation for the reduced density operator or on a stochastic process in the Hilbert space of the reduced system. In general, the CPU time consumptions depend on the system size N as Nα+1 and as R(N) Nα, respectively. R(N) is defined by prescribing the tolerable error of the stochastic result, and α is characteristic of the specific system. Since R(N) is a non-increasing function of N, the stochastic method is found to be always faster for large systems. This is demonstrated on the dissipative Morse oscillator in an intense laser pulse.
