Grazing incidence scattering of charged particles from metal surfaces is dominated by electronic interactions. Nevertheless, elastic processes may play an important role, too. The use of different isotopes of the same projectile allows the variation of the elastic part of the interaction without influencing the electronic processes. Experimental features due to both types of interactions can be separated. We use a time-of-flight (TOF) method and an electrostatic analyzer (ESA) to study the grazing incidence scattering of 3He2+ and 4He2+ from Al(110) surfaces experimentally. From the spectra the inelastic energy loss as well as the straggling of the projectiles can be obtained. The experimental results are compared to simulations either based on the binary-collision-approximation (BCA) or based on Newton’s equations (classical trajectories, CT).
