Alkali metal adsorption on silicon surfaces is a subject of widespread interest in surface science. Lithium is different from other alkalis in that it reacts strongly with the Si substrate at high coverages and forms an amorphous Li-silicide. By annealing the substrate during or after Li deposition, ordered Li-induced reconstructions can be formed. In the present work we have studied the annealed Li/Si(100) surface with high-resolution core-level spectroscopy and with scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). By evaporating Li onto a heated sample, an ordered surface structure was obtained, with an apparent c(16x2) periodicity, as observed with LEED. Both the core-level spectroscopy data and the STM images gave further evidence that the surface is significantly rearranged compared to the clean surface. The STM images show a striped surface structure consistent with the LEED pattern. The Si 2p core-level spectra show two surface-shifted components with roughly equal intensity, indicating that the Si atoms in the top Si layer have two distinctly different sites.
