We report the observation and characterization of a new, non-resonant intense field ionization mechanism in polyatomic molecules: non-adiabatic multi-electron (NME) dynamics. The response of a given molecule depends on parameters such as molecular geometry and bonding, the path length of delocalized electrons and/or ionization potential as well as on basic laser beam parameters such as wavelength and intensity. Popular quasi-static tunnelling models of strong field molecular ionization, based upon an adiabatic electron response, are demonstrated to be inadequate when electron delocalization becomes important. The NME ionization mechanism greatly affects molecular ionization, its fragmentation and its energetics. Such multi-electron effects are present even in the long wavelength limit. These results have important consequences for many applications of intense femtosecond pulses, from controlling molecular dynamics to mass spectrometry.
