Clusters built from polar molecules like SO₂ decay into positively and negatively charged fragments upon collision with a target surface. We recently explained this effect in terms of a pickup of alkali surface adsorbates during the collision, followed by electron delocalization. Here we discuss the co-pickup of polar spectator molecules like H₂O during the surface impact. Of particular interest is the pickup of fluorescein (C₂₀H₁₀O₅Cl₂) which may offer new means for the mass spectrometry of bio-molecules.
