We present investigations of collisional processes using ultracold atoms as a target inside the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring [1]. Cesium atoms are confined in a magneto-optical trap at a temperature below 100 µK. The position of the atom cloud (dia. 100 µm) can be controlled horizontally and vertically by static magnetic fields over a range of 20 mm. The interaction of the ion beam with the cold target is monitored by measuring the loss rate of trapped atoms. The total cross section for trap-loss collisions between cesium atoms and highly charged carbon ions Cq+ (q = 3 - 6) at energies of ∼ 2 MeV × q2 is determined. The results are compared to theoretical calculations which indicate that the major contribution to the cross section is the ionization of the target rather than electron capture.
