A New Set-up to Investigate the Coulomb Explosion of Metal Clusters — •Paul Radcliffe, Silvio Teuber, Thomas Fennel, Tilo Döppner, Josef Tiggesbäumker und Karl-Heinz Meiwes-Broer — Universität Rostock, FB Physik, Universitätsplatz 3, 18051 Rostock

Clusters of metal atoms in intense femtosecond laser fields undergo multi-ionization. In contrast to atoms, the interaction leads to very efficient charging of the cluster, where hundreds of electrons are ejected. Pump-probe experiments have shown the time dependence of this charging process, giving insight into how the electromagnetic radiation couples to the cluster [1]. To further improve these experiments, and to allow the study of a wider range of materials, a magnetron cluster source was constructed [2]. The usability of this source for the Coulomb explosion experiment is demonstrated for silver clusters.
