We studied the the interplay of structure, magnetism and transport properties of epitaxial, thin films of La0.9Sr0.1MnO3, grown on a SrTiO3 (001) substrate, as function of thickness. The structure and the magnetotransport properties of these thin film manganites differ significantly from bulk materials because of the presence of strain due to the lattice mismatch between substrate and film. By means of x-ray scattering technique we found for thin films (<50 nm) superlattice peaks close to the central Bragg peak (assigned to a modulation of the lattice), whose temperature dependence is correlated to the magnetization. In contrast to bulk materials below T=200 K these films turn from a paramagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal. Thicker films (50 nm<d<360 nm), which like bulk material are insulators at all temperatures, have instead side peaks, attributed to a coherent twinning, which show no temperature dependence. Additionally they have superlattice peaks related to octahedral tilting, which unlike bulk samples appear only below the Curie temperature. Latest results about structural investigation will be presented.
