On a conducting (metal or semiconductor) surface in contact with electrolyte it is possible to control the surface chemical potential via the electrical potential applied to the sample. Thus adsorption and desorption processes as as well as structural changes of the bare crystal surfaces can be initiated close to or far from equilibrium depending on the choice of potential. At the x-ray standing Waves surface science beamline ID32 at the ESRF we are studying these phenomena with newly developed electrochemical cells in situ with x-ray diffraction and x-ray standing waves. We will present results for potential induced structural changes for Sulfur and Thiol adlayers on different low indexed gold surfaces observed by x-ray diffraction. Such Thiol adlayers on metals are important because of their potential technological applications e.g. as corrosion inhibitors. We could trace the response of the substrate surface upon potential controlled adsorption/desorption of the adlayers. Furthermore we will discuss first results on the early stages of corrosion of metal alloys.
