Because of their peculiar electronic properties, carbon nanotubes are currently favored as potential nanosized electrical conductors. The electronic properties of graphite stripes, on the other hand, have not been explored at all. We have grown monolayer graphite stripes on stepped Ni(771) as substrate by cracking of propylene [1,2] and studied the electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission. While parallel to the stripe direction a typical monolayer graphite electronic structure appears, we observe in the perpendicular direction very clearly two interwoven graphite-type electronic structures and the formation of band gaps due to the lateral superlattice. Comparison to the literature suggests that this is the first time the electronic structure of a nanostripe system is characterized by photoelectron spectroscopy.
