AN INVESTIGATION OF CRACK PROPAGATION IN PA6 BY MEANS OF micro-SAXS AND micro-WAXS MEASUREMENTS — •Nikolaos Zafeiropoulos1, Stephan Roth2, Schneider Konrad1, Dieter Jehnichen1, Andreas Pohlers1, Manfred Burghammer2, and Manfred Stamm11Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden, Hohe Str. 6, 01069 Dresden, Germany — 2European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), ID13 Beamline, BP 220, F-38043 Grenoble Cedex, France

Synchrotron radiation x-ray scattering has been employed to investigate the crack propagation and the damage zone in a polyamide 6 (PA6) polymer. Two sets of tests have been performed with the use of a microfocus beam, SAXS and WAXS, at the ID13 beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. In particular, a crack was introduced through the use of a wedge in the PA6, and the region at the tip of the visibly seen crack has been scanned on the y-z directions. Both WAXS and SAXS measurements revealed that the main crack propagated through the material for about 4-5 mm in front of the tip of the visible crack. Significant crazing and deformation could be seen at the vicinity of the main crack path. The data are currently analysed in terms of scattering due to the presence of voids/crazes, and our model has been successful in extracting the structure factor of the PA6 from the uni-dimensional scattering graphs.
