Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) is a well known method to determine the diffusion coefficients of single molecules in solution. In this technique it is observed how long it takes until a single molecule passes a small (ca 1 fl) volume illuminated by a laser. All experiments so far are done in aqueous enviroment.

To use this method in polymer physics we synthesized different polymers, which were end-functionalised with a single OH-Group. The end group was coupled with the fluorescent dye Rhodamine B. All steps of the synthesis of a dye labelled polystyrene (Mw=10000 g/mol) were analysed by MALDI-TOF.

The polymers we used to determine the diffusion coefficient in dependence of the molecular weight in a range of 10 kg/mol up to 1000 kg/mol.
