Layered-silicate based polymer nanocomposites have become attractive materials because of their improved mechanical properties. The layered structure of the filler offers the possibility for the polymer chains to intercalate (1). This raises the interesting question concerning the dynamics of polymers in nanoscopically confined space. We have prepared and investigated different polyisoprene(PI)/silicate composites. Molecular weight, end group type, and method of preparation were varied. The resulting morphologies were investigated by SAXS and TEM. Depending on the method of preparation intercalated or exfoliated structures were obtained. Dielectric spectroscopy has been utilized to study the dynamics of the PI chains in a broad frequency and temperature range. The effect of confinement on both cooperative modes related to the global (normal) and segmental dynamics will be discussed and compared to recent data on PI ultra-thin films(2).
