In the last decade strong efforts have been done to fabricate Photonic Crystals in the visible and near IR regime of electromagnetic radiation. Photonic Crystals can be considered as an analogue to semiconductors for the manipulation and control of photons instead of electrons.

We report on the fabrication of three-dimensional Photonic Crystals from polymer colloids quoted as artificial opals. The chemistry within and outside the colloids has strong influences on the physical properties of the final Photonic Crystal film. Therefore we synthesize and crystallize highly monodisperse colloids with a large variety of polymer chemistry. Properties like temperature stability, refractive index contrast, size, solvent stability and nevertheless the ability to further chemistry within the Photonic Crystal can be tuned via chemistry.

In addition we show further methods to make a Photonic Crystal from colloids to a highly developed device. Different crystallization methods, implementation of fluorescent dyes and replica formation with inorganic dielectrics are investigated to open the ability of opto-electronic information management.
