Growth of p-phenylene molecules on dielectric surfaces — •Frank Balzer1 and Horst-Günter Rubahn21Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Institut für Physik/ASP — 2SDU Odense, Fysisk Institut, Denmark

Structural properties of ultrathin p-phenylene oligomer films (p-nP, n = 4,5,6) are investiaged via low energy electron diffraction (LEED), fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy. On NaCl(001) and KCl(001) LEED-pattern from upright molecules are observed, which allow the determination of surface unit cells with respect to the substrate lattice. On muscovite mica (0001) at elevated temperatures single crystalline fibers of laying molecules are grown. These fibers have widths and heights of several tens of nanometers, but lengths up to several hundred microns. They form large domains up to cm2, and their orientation is strictly determined by the presence of mica surface dipoles.
