Wettability, chemical composition and morphology study of coatings containing fluorinated end groups. — •Alla Synytska, Dietmar Appelhans, Zhanggang Wang, Dieter Pleul, and Karina Grundke — IPF, Dresden, 01067, Hohe Str. 6

The wetting and adhesion properties of polymers with low-energy surfaces are important in numerous applications, such as protective coatings and materials with enhanced biocompatibility, and are a topic of appreciable scientific interest. Side chain groups attached to the polymer backbone have been often introduced to study their influence on the surface properties of these materials [1]. Studies conducted in the past decade indicate that, in addition to chemical composition of the polymeric backbone, end-group functionality can also have a significant impact on the surface properties of polymers [2]. par Here we report a detailed study of the surface properties of linear polyesters with perfluorinated end groups using contact angle measurements, scanning force microscopy (SFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Films of these materials were deposited from the melt onto polyester supporting substrates and prepared by spin-coating. Our results show preferential surface migration of the low energy-group that scales with their bulk concentration [1] K.
