Chemical and Structural Changes of Plasma Treated Polymers — •Markus Bach, Thorsten Meyer, Andreas Selinger, and Manfred Neumann — Universität Osnabrück, Fachbereich Physik, Barbarastr. 7, 49069 Osnabrück

Considering the plasma treatment of a polymer sample, a lot of different reactions take place inside the plasma and between plasma and sample. As the reactions lead to chemical and structural changes, these modifications are dependent on the kind of plasma, polymer and treatment after the modification. The chemical change can be traced by high resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, ESCA). For simple polymers like polyethylene or polypropylene, this technique only reveals the carbon 1s line. Changes in the polymer will be traced by a chemical labelling process, in which chemicals reacts with the polymer under the formation of groups with new elements. Therefore predicted reaction paths could be reviewed, like here the passivation reactions of nitrogen monoxide with different types of radicals. Together with the observation of the structural change by scanning force microscopy, this leads to an improved understanding of some basic effects in a plasma treatment process.
