Characterizing structures that are not perfectly regular is a very difficult task. In our case, the dewetting of a thin polymer film leads to a corrugated film surface with characteristic properties. With the help of Minkowski functionals we analyzed the properties of the morphology and were therefore able to show for the first time a quantitative comparison of experiments and simulations [1]. We find scaling laws in the dynamical behavior of the experimental system that call for a theoretical explanation. We moreover compare the analysis by Minkowski measures with ’traditional’ image analysis procedures like Fourier transformation.
