A polymer mushroom compressed between two walls: Monte Carlo Simulations — •Federica Rampf, Wolfgang Paul, and Kurt Binder — Institut für Physik, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität

The deformation behavior of adsorbed polymer chains at interfaces is of interest in order to understand colloid stabilization, biopolymers at cell membranes, interaction between polymers and AFM tips, etc. Here we study a polymer mushroom in good solvent compressed by two parallel walls. This problem has been attracting considerable attention for many years and especially the scaling behavior of the chain geometry has been studied in the literature. We are using the bond fluctuation lattice model for which we have developed an efficient simulation program. This program incorporates modified pivot and slithering snake moves in addition to the standard random hopping moves. Excluded volume constraints are checked through a hierarchical algorithm which is also used to determine pair contacts. We determine the chain geometry of the mushrooms and their elastic constants over a wide range of chain lengths and wall spacings.
