Asymptotic behavior of hard-sphere mixtures — •Christian Grodon, Roland Roth, and Siegfried Dietrich — Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung, Heisenbergstr.3, 70569 Stuttgart

We study the asymptotic behavior of the pair correlation functions in binary hard-sphere mixtures by calculating the leading order poles of its Fourier transforms. The pole structure of hard-sphere mixtures shows a much larger variety of patterns compared to the one component system. For the determination of the poles the direct pair correlation functions are needed which we calculate within the framework of DFT using two versions of the fundamental measure theory. For size ratios asymmetric enough we find crossover lines in the fluid part of the phase diagram at which the wavelength of the leading order pole changes discontinuously. Accordingly the oscillations of all pair correlation functions in the asymptotic regime change their wavelength. We confirm the predictions by numerically calculating density profiles around a big hard sphere and close to a planar hard wall.
