Hydrodynamics of a nanoscopic liquid film under mechanical load — •Juan G. Diaz and Wolfgang Paul — Institut für Physik, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität, 55099 Mainz

Modern developments in surface force measurements and atomic force microscopy allow for detailed experimental investigations of the viscoelastic response of surfaces and liquid films adsorbed onto surfaces.

We theoretically investigate the hydrodynamics of thin liquid films on a substrate. The idea is to extract information on the mechanical response of the liquid via a local mechanical perturbation induced by an oscillating nano particle above the film. We analyze the limit of small perturbations via linearized hydrodynamics for a compressible fluid. The response depends on the geometry of the system as well as the frequency of this perturbation.

Possible extensions of this work towards the viscoelastic response of non-Newtonian fluids will be indicated.
