Localization in disordered systems: signatures in phase space — •André Wobst, Gert-Ludwig Ingold, and Peter Hänggi — Institut für Physik, Universität Augsburg

We discuss localization properties of quantum states by means of the Husimi function [1,2]. An advantage of this phase space description is to adequately take into account both, localization in real space for strong disorder as well as localization in momentum space for weak disorder. Although the finite resolution available in phase space due to Heisenberg’s uncertainty relation is likely to be considered a disadvantage of this description, it turns out to be a crucial ingredience to the discussion of localization. By comparing the Anderson model and the Aubry-André model, our analysis points to the relevance of the coupling between momentum eigenstates at weak potential strength for the delocalization of quantum particles. These effects become particularly apparent in phase space.
