n-type doping of organic matrixes is gaining increasing attention, because it can improve both electron injection and electron transport devices such as organic light emitting devices or organic solar cells. Organic donor and acceptors as dopants are considered to be crucial to prepare stable multilayer devices with doped charge transport layers. Howver strong donors capable of doping commonly employed electron transport materials are not available due to their chemical instability. We follow a new approach to n-type doping of organic matrices. We obtain an extremely oxygen-sensitive donor from a stable precursor compound in situ. Using the cationic dye Pyronin B chloride as a model precursor we have carried out a field effect study to characterize the properties of doped thin films. The results prove an increase in n-type conductivity when using Pyronin B chloride as the dopant precursor. The results are discussed in the framework of transport in disordered thin films according to a model proposed recently (B. Maennig et al, Phys. Rev. B, 64, 195208 (2001)). We propose a reaction route for the doping process which is backed by spectroscopic evidence.
