Bulk-quantity tetrapod-like ZnO nanorods synthesized by thermal evaporation — •Naigui Shang, Stefano Virdis, Carsten Ronning, and Hans Hofsäss — II. Physikalisches Institut, Universität Göttingen, Bunsenstrasse 7-9, 37073 Göttingen

As a wide band gap (3.37 eV) semiconductor with large exciton binding energy (60 meV), ZnO is much interested for ultraviolet light emitting and eletroluminescent devices in recent years. In this letter, the growth and photoluminescence of different sized tetrapod-like ZnO nanorods are presented. The tetrapod-like ZnO nanorods in bulk quantity were grown by thermal evaporation of pure Zn particles or ZnO + C mixture powders in air in a high temperature tube furnace. Every tetrapod-like nanorod consists of four needle shape legs united at a common junction. The length and diameter of the four legs increase with the growth temperature. The length of such legs varies from several tens micrometers to several hundreds nanometers while the diameter of legs decreases from about 1 micrometer to 30-50 nm. Room temperature photoluminescence of different sized tetrapod-like ZnO rods was performed with the excitation of He-Cd laser. Except for a peak at about 390 nm originated from band edge emission of ZnO, a strong green light emission due to the oxygen vacancy was found at about 500 nm for all tetrapod-like ZnO rods.
