Morphological and electrical characterization of dye sensitized ZnO as an electrode for photoelectrochemical cells — •Jens Reemts1, Achim Kittel1, Jürgen Parisi1, Esther Ebel2, Dieter Wöhrle2, Derck Schlettwein3, and Tsukasa Yoshida41Energy and Semiconductor Research, Department of Physics, University of Oldenburg — 2Institute of Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Bremen — 3Physical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Oldenburg — 4ERES-Division, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering, Gifu University, Japan

A solar cell of the Graetzel type is usually fabricated with dye sensitized TiO2 as one electrode. We investigate ZnO/dye electrodes where the dye is already added during the electrodeposition process of the ZnO. Due to its high surface area and a strong attachment of non-aggregated sensitizer dyes ZnO is, aside from TiO2, a promising semiconducting material for solar energy conversion. We analyzed the influence of the dye and the dye concentration on the surface morphology of the ZnO film by means of AFM, SEM and STM. The electrical properties of the different films were characterized by means of IV-measurements and tunneling spectroscopy.
