Ultrabroadband Terahertz Experiments in Femtosecond Semiconductor Physics — •Alfred Leitenstorfer, Rupert Huber, Florian Tauser, and Andreas Brodschelm — Physik-Department E11, Technische Universität München

Recent progress in field-resolved detection and coherent generation of ultrafast electro-magnetic transients covering the entire mid-infrared spectral region is presented [1,2]. These techniques open up a direct way to trace charge movement on a time scale of 10 fs. We study some of the fastest processes occuring in condensed matter:
(i) Femtosecond transient transport in GaAs, InP and Si semiconductor devices is investigated via ultrabroadband THz emission spectroscopy [3].
(ii) The ultrafast buildup of Coulomb screening and collective behavior in a dense electon-hole plasma extremely far from thermal equilibrium is monitored in two-time optical pump – THz probe measurements [4].
Future fields of applications of these methods and the technological challenges involved will be discussed.
