The optical properties of semiconductor nanocrystals (colloidal quantum dots) are of growing interest for optoelectronics. We report on fluorescent resonant energy transfer (FRET) between monolayers of nanocrystals of two different sizes. Alternating monolayers were prepared from highly luminescent CdTe nanocrystals with a narrow size distribution and were interconnected by a thin layer of an inert polymer using layer-by-layer assembly. FRET from a layer of small nanocrystals (donor) to a layer of large nanocrystals (acceptor) has been shown by integrated photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, as well as time resolved measurements with picosecond resolution using a streak camera.
