Magnetic dichroism in photoelectron spectroscopy for the magnetic domain imaging in a photoelectron emission microscope — •W. Kuch, L. I. Chelaru, F. Offi, M. Kotsugi, and J. Kirschner — Max-Planck-Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, 06120 Halle

Magnetic contrast for the microscopic imaging of magnetic domains in a photoelectron emission microscope (PEEM) is provided by magnetic dichroisms, which result in a magnetization direction dependence of the signal detected. Besides the usually employed magnetic circular dichroism in x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XMCD), also magnetic dichroisms in photoelectron emission spectroscopy can be used for magnetic domain imaging provided the electrons that create the image can be monochromatized. We show that magnetic domain images can be obtained by magnetic dichroism in photoemission using a PEEM if a commercially available retarding grid electron energy filter is inserted before the imaging unit. Magnetic domain images of an ultrathin Fe film on W(001) obtained by circular magnetic dichroism in Fe valence band photoemission and by linear magnetic dichroism in Fe 3p photoemission are presented. The complementarity of the information contained in these images with respect to magnetic imaging using XMCD is discussed.
