Interplay between magnetic and atomic structures of Mn3N2 surfaces — •Alexey Dick, Sixten Boeck, and Jörg Neugebauer — Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Faradayweg 4-6, D-14195 Berlin-Dahlem

For spintronic materials it is of great interest to resolve spin and chemical structure with the highest possible spatial resolution. Recently, for the case of the Mn3N2 (010), surface atomic-scale spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy has been successfully applied to study simultaneously atomic and magnetic surface structures [1]. The magnetic structure, however, has been so far only analyzed using Mn3N2 bulk calculations [1]. We have therefore studied atomic geometry, electronic and magnetic structures, and thermodynamic stability of an extensive set of atomically and magnetically reconstructed Mn3N2 (010) surfaces employing LSDA-DFT calculations. These results give a detailed insight into the mechanisms stabilizing the surface. STM simulations based on the calculated surface band structure allow a direct interpretation of the experimental data.
