Magnetic ordering in heavy fermion compound CeCoGe3 — •A. Das1, R.K. Kremer1, B. Ouladdiaf2, and M. Banks11MPI fuer Festkoerperforschung, Stuttgart, Germany — 2ILL, Grenoble Cedex France

CeCoGe3 crystallizes in the tetragonal BaNiSn3-type structure (SG I4mm). It exhibits two magnetic transitions at 21K and 16K attributed to ferri- and antiferromagnetic ordering, respectively. To study the nature of magnetic ordering in this compound we carried out neutron diffraction experiments on a polycrystalline sample on high intensity medium resolution diffractometer D20 at the ILL. The diffraction patterns recorded at several temperatures between 25K and 2K do not show the expected superlattice reflections. Nor was there any enhancement in intensity of the fundamental reflections. On application of magnetic field of 5T at 2K, significant enhancement in intensity is found for reflections (101) and (110) whereas no change was observed in the case of (002) reflection indicating that the orientation of the moments are along the c-axis. The absence of superlattice reflections and the field dependence of the fundamental reflections lead to a model of spin frustration and magnetic glass transition below 16K in this compound.
