Irradiation with ion beams appears to be an efficient technique to modify magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin films. When applying an external field during irradiation, various anisotropy directions and symmetries are induced [1,2]. Basing on this knowledge and on our previous experiments [2,3], we performed a detailed study on the influence of the implanted ion species and fluence on the magnetic properties of thin iron films. For this purpose, 90 keV Fe+, 130 keV Kr+ and 200 keV Xe+ ions with fluences from 1·1015 - 5·1016 were implanted into 75 nm thick polycrystalline Fe films. The structural and magnetical changes were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and magnetooptical Kerr-effect analysis (MOKE). Correlations between changes in structure and magnetic anisotropies were found. It is shown that the changes in the film properties are mainly due to radiation damage and that the projectile species plays a minor role.
