The magnetic properties of thin ferromagnetic (multilayer) films are known to depend on various parameters of film deposition and treatment such as film thickness and shape, crystallite structure, composition and surface/interface roughness. Permalloy films of 72 nm thickness were prepared by DC sputtering and irradiated at room temperature with 75 keV Ar+, 140 keV Kr+ or 200 keV Xe+ ions. Changes of the microstructure and magnetic properties were measured via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) and Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS). The ion irradiations induce a strong magnetic polarisation in the film. A combination of XRD and MOKE suggest that ion irradiations improve the degree of crystallinity and increase the lattice constant due to local lattice expansion. The MOKE hysteresis loops reveal that, with increasing ion fluence, the reversal of the magnetization changes gradually from rotation-dominated in the as-deposited films to domain-wall-motion-dominated at the highest ion fluences.
