Structural and magnetic properties of ZnV2O4 — •Matthias Klemm, Stefan Ebbinghaus, and Siegfried Horn — Institut f. Physik, Universität Augsburg, 86159 Augsburg, Germany

The compound ZnV2O4 is isostructural to the heavy fermion system LiV2O4 and crystallizes in the cubic spinel-type structure. The vanadium ions occupy octahedral sites and form a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra, which is magnetically frustrated with respect to nearest neighbour antiferromagnetic interactions. To investigate the possible role of magnetic frustration in both systems we investigated the structural and magnetic properties of single crystals of ZnV2O4. The structural investigation show our crystals to be of high quality and to display the Fd3m structure at room temperature. No indications for site interchange between Zn and V are found. While ZnV2O4 polycrystals show a structural transition at T=50 K and subsequently antiferromagnetic order [1], the formation of a spin-glass state is observed at low temperatures in single crystals, which we attribute to magnetic frustration effects. The possible reasons for the different behavior of single- and polycrystalline materials is discussed.
