KERR MICROSCOPY STUDY OF POLYCRYSTALLINE THIN FILM STRIPES — •Jeffrey McCord1, Till Schmitte2, Rudolf Schäfer1, Hartmut Zabel2 und Ludwig Schultz11Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research, Helmholtzstrasse 20, 01096 Dresden — 2Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Institut für Experimentalphysik und Festkörperphysik, 44780 Bochum

Magneto-optical domain studies on sputtered polycrystalline Fe (50 nm) gratings with a stripe width varying from 3.7 microns down to 0.5 microns with a constant periodicity of 5 microns were done. The domain processes are directly compared to hysteresis curve measurements of the stripe arrays. Depending on the external magnetic field direction a change in domain nucleation and the actual resulting domain structure is found. Complicated multi-domain states down to a stripe width of 1.7 microns are observed in the polycrystalline samples. For an intermediate width a change from a Landau-Lifschitz-like pattern to a ripple modulated domain structure is observed. The most narrowly spaced stripes display a different domain configuration with the average magnetization vector perpendicular to the stripes, indicating dipolar coupling between the elements. All results are explained by the existing uniaxial magnetic anisotropy together with the shape anisotropy varying with stripe width.
