Since years ferromagnetic transition-metal oxide (TMO) films have been a subject of intensive research due to possible technical applications in various fields of technology. Highly spin-polarized TMO films, among them magnetite (Fe3O4) are claimed to have a large potential for future applications in magnetoelectronic devices.

Thin epitaxial Fe3O4(111) films have been prepared by in situ oxidation of thin Fe(110) films grown on Al2O3(1120) substrates using a Mo(110) buffer layer. Scanning tunneling microscopy images show a well-defined Fe3O4(111) surface. Well-controlled interface properties at the Fe(110)/Fe3O4(111) interface were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. A high spin polarization value of about −(60±5)% was found near the Fermi energy at room temperature by means of spin-polarized photoelectron spectroscopy (hν=21.2 eV). The electronic structure and the spin polarization are compared to the corresponding values recently found on epitaxial Fe3O4(111) films grown on W(110) single crystal substrates.
