Crystallographic and magnetic structure of Tb2PdSi3 — •Matthias Frontzek1, Andreas Kreyssig1, Matthias Doerr1, Holger Bitterlich2, Guenther Behr2, Jens-Uwe Hoffman3, Dietmar Hohlwein3, and Micheal Loewenhaupt11IAPD, TU Dresden, 01062 Dresden — 2IFW Dresden, Helmholtzstr. 20, 01069 Dresden — 3Hahn-Meitner-Institut, BENSC, Glienicker Strasse 100, 14109 Berlin

The series R2PdSi3 (R = rare earth metal), crystallizing in a AlB2 derived hexagonal structure, have been found to exhibit complex magnetic behavior. Susceptibility measurements on a Tb2PdSi3 single crystal show a strong anisotropy between basal plane and the hexagonal c-axis as well as complex magnetic properties. The magnetic rare earth ions occupy the Al positions of the AlB2 structure while the non-magnetic Pd and Si atoms are supposed to be statistically distributed on the B positions.

We performed a neutron diffraction experiment on E2 at HMI Berlin within a temperature range from 1.5 K to 300 K using a single crystal of high quality. We found a crystallographic superstructure yielding satellite reflections at (1/2, 1/2, L) at room temperature. We determined the values of L to be L = n/8 where n is an integer. The existence of a crystallographic superstructure in ternary intermetallic 2-1-3-compounds was quoted by several authors but never definitely verified. Below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of TN = 24 K we found magnetic satellites at (i/2, j/2, L′) where i, j are integers. In this case the L′ values seem to be L′ = n/16.
