Carbon nanotubes (CNT) filled with ferromagnetic metals like Fe, Ni or Co may have significant potential in data storage due to the anisotropic magnetic behavior of the metal nanowires. In addition the carbon shells provide an effective barrier against oxidation which ensures a long-term stability of the ferromagnetic filling.

We produce Fe-filled CNT using a CVD process. The nanotubes were grown by pyrolysis of ferrocene on oxidized silicon substrates covered with different kinds of ultrathin seed layers. SEM and TEM studies indicate the nanotubes to be filled and aligned perpendicularly to the substrate surface. They have outer diameters of 40-100 nm and diameters of the metal nanowires of 20-40 nm. Here, we report on the dependence of the nanowires crystal structure on the type of the seed layer. XRD analysis shows the presence of both bcc- and fcc-Fe in the metal core. We discuss the correlation between the structural and magnetic properties.
