The electronic and structural properties of ultrathin epitaxial aluminum oxide layer grown on epitaxial Fe(110) films were investigated at room temperature by means of low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The determined in-plane lattice parameter of the epitaxial Al2O3 layers is in good agreement with that of bulk α-Al2O3 [1,2]. A spin polarization of P=−(15±5)% near the Fermi energy EF is found for one monolayer of α-Al2O3 on epitaxial Fe(110). This value results from the attenuation of P=−80 % of the epitaxial Fe(110) underlayer by the oxide layer thickness and the spin-independent part of the scattering cross section [3].
