The Co50Fe50 (CoFe) alloy, known commercially as permendur, is attractive for technological applications that require soft magnetic materials with high permeability, high saturation magnetization and high Curie temperature. It has a very high positive magnetostriction coefficient and has been extensively used in spin-valve structures and magnetic tunnel junctions. CoFe films 75 nm thick deposited on Si(100) at room temperature, were irradiated at room temperature by Ne, Xe and Au ions, keeping the penetration depth of the ion inside the film constant. The films were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering, X-ray diffraction and Magneto-optic kerr effect. The coercivity decreases as a funcion of ion fluence in Xe and Au ions, while it increases with lower fluence of Ne ions and then it decreases with higher fluence of Ne ions. After the fluence of 1016 ions/cm2, the coercivity of the easy axis was reduced from 120 Oe to about 40 Oe. The detailed results are discussed in relation to fourfold and uniaxial anisotropy.
