The magnetization reversal dynamics of the permalloy layer in a Fe19Ni81/Cu/Co spin valve was observed in the ns range using photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism to obtain time-resolved magnetic domain images. The measurements were performed in a stroboscopic pump-probe mode. Magnetic pulses as high as 300 Oe were applied by a micro-coil mounted on the sample holder (pump), and the photon pulses from single bunch operation of BESSY II were used to obtain magnetic domain images at the Fe L3 absorption edge (probe). Reproducible magnetic domain wall motion and nucleation were observed by scanning the delay time between the magnetic field pulse and the photon bunch in steps of a few ns. The balance between domain nucleation and domain wall propagation was found to depend on the field strength and the duration of the magnetic pulse, but also differs on both sides of the minor loop of the permalloy layer.
