Photoemission study of short- and long-range magnetic oscillations in Cr/Fe(100) and Cr/W(100) — •Denis Vyalikh1, Manuel Richter2, and Serguei Molodtsov31Institut für Experimentalphysik, FU Berlin — 2Leibnitz-Institut für Festkörper- und Werkstoffforschung Dresden — 3Institut für Oberflächen- und Mikrostrukturphysik, TU Dresden

The antiferromagnetic nature of the short- range oscillations in magnetic coupling between magnetic layers in multilayer structures of transition metals is well understood by now. Notwithstanding the origin of the long-range magnetic oscillations in these systems is still very much controversial. The aliasing of the short range oscillations relating to the spin-density wave excitation, the RKKY or quantum-well states origin of these oscillations are widely debated in the literature.

We report on angle-resolved photoemission (PE) study of epitaxial Cr/Fe(100) and Cr/W(100) systems varying temperature and thickness of the Cr layers. The experimental data are compared with the results of magnetic slab calculations using the LDA-FPLO code [1].

For the first time both the short- and the long-range oscillations were simultaneously observed in the PE from the valence bands of Cr. Thereby, the period of the long-range coupling is very sensitive to the substrate and the temperature. Our data favors aliasing nature of the long-range oscillations.
