Electronic structure of thin films of Cr(110) — •Serguei Molodtsov1, Frederik Schiller1, Denis Vyalikh2, Vito Servedio1, and Clemens Laubschat11Institut für Oberflächen- und Mikrostrukturphysik, TU Dresden — 2Institut für Experimentalphysik, FU Berlin

In spite of numerous experimental and theoretical studies the electronic structure of thin films of transition metals remains a challenging task until now. The interest is in part driven by their possible technological use as spacer or magnetic layers in magnetic multilayer structures [1]. While the surface electronic properties may strongly influence magnetic coupling at the interfaces of the magnetic multilayers, the bulk electronic structure is responsible for propagation of the magnetic interaction through the spacers.

In the present contribution we report on a photoemission (PE) study of electronic structure of thin epitaxial films of Cr(110) grown in situ onto a W(110) substrate. Valence-band PE spectra and Fermi surfaces measured with PE for film of various thicknesses (from 10 to 100Å) at different temperatures are analyzed using results of LKKR calculations performed within the one-step model of PE. Surface states were found in the region of the Fermi-energy gap, which is expected in the antiferromagnetic phase due to the spin-density wave excitation.
