Giant Zeeman splitting and interatomic exchange interactions in diluted II-VI semiconductors. — •Leonid Sandratskii and Patrick Bruno — Max-Planck Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, D-06120 Halle

The diluted magnetic semiconductor (ZnMn)Se is successfully used as spin-injector in the experiments on spin-injection into semiconductor. We report the first-principles calculation of the electronic structure and exchange interactions in diluted magnetic semiconductors (ZnMn)Se, (ZnCr)Se and (ZnFe)Se. We show that the giant exchange splitting observed in (ZnMn)Se under application of magnetic field is preserved also for the antiferromagnetic configuration of the Mn moments. Therefore, the giant Zeeman splitting is not related to a corresponding change of the energy of the system. We calculate interatomic exchange parameters [1] and explain why the strong sp-d exchange interaction does not result, for small Mn concentrations, in a sizable exchange between the Mn moments. We study the effect of co-doping on the magnetic properties of (ZnMn)Se. The properties of (ZnMn)Se are compared with those of (ZnCr)Se and (ZnFe)Se.
