Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) has revealed new and interesting aspects of surface states on noble metals, such as defect scattering, lateral confinement, surface state mediated interactions and the lifetime of these states. We report a quantitative low-temperature STM spectroscopy study on Ag(111) over a wide range of tunneling currents enabling us to probe the surface state of Ag(111) over an uprecedented range of tip-sample distances. The excellent agreement found with our one-dimensional potential model calculation allows a better understanding of the surface state wavefunction.
