Ab initio Investigations of the Domain-Wall Width of 1 ML and 2 ML Fe on W(110) — •Marcus Heide, Xiliang Nie, Gustav Bihlmayer, and Stefan Blügel — Institut für Festkörperforschung, Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich, Germany

Fe stripes grown on W(110) vicinal surfaces with a thickness of 1 or 2 Fe mono-layers (ML) exhibit two-dimensional ferromagnetic domain structures. Spin-polarized STM experiments [ e.g. M. Pratzer et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 127201 (2001) ] show that the domain wall width depends critically on the film thickness. In 1 ML thick Fe films the walls seem atomically sharp while in 2 ML thick films they are extended over ca. 8 nm.

The magnetic structure of the domain-walls is determined by the competition of spin-stiffness, spin-orbit coupling and magnetic dipolar interactions. In this contribution we describe the walls with a simple model taking the required parameters from ab-initio calculations. The limits of the model and the requirements on the ab-initio calculations are discussed. The calculations are performed with the FLAPW-method based on density functional theory and realized in the Fleur-code.
